India is seeing a huge burst in entrepreneurial activity. With Indian companies doing extremely well in all kinds of fields ranging from IT to Pharmaceuticals, there is a lot of confidence in the country about setting up businesses that are not just successful but also become international brands. There are role models of how middle-class people have managed to make it big in the business arena, even when they have not come from a business family.
Traditionally, India is not a country made of people with high appetite for risk. People tend to look for secure jobs, preferably in the government. Being an entrepreneur is not very actively encouraged by the family or the society in general. Even government support is hard to come by.
But things are changing now. All leading technology and management institutes work on some form of incubation in their campuses to mentor budding entrepreneurs. There are many incubation centers now. The office of the Development Commissioner, MSME (Micro, small and medium enterprises) also runs various programs and schemes to enable entrepreneurship across the country. Startup companies have a lot of support in the form of associations and groups that are mentored by successful entrepreneurs. The Internet is coming to the help of all, enabling entrepreneurs to reach out to people who can assist in any issue they might have.
India is a stable economy, which is now betting big on its private sector to hit new growth levels. These are good times to be an entrepreneur in India.
